David's story

Why did you join hmv?

I'd joined Waterstones, when they were still part of the hmv Group, as a temp in the Solihull office before becoming permanent. A little while later, a number of hmv functions moved to Solihull, and I was keen to work for that side of the group. hmv has always been where I spend most of my money, so to be a part of the company that I had such an affinity for was quite exciting.

What do you enjoy most about working at hmv?

I really enjoy working in a retail company. The environment we're in is always changing, and it means that we have to adapt as well. There are always plenty of new challenges, meaning work is never the same for too long. Being so fond of our shops and what we sell also gives it that extra dimension.

What does your job involve?

My job is Senior Commercial Analyst in the Commercial Finance team. My role is to provide financial support and analysis to the Product teams. This is usually revolving around forecasting the company's sales and stock levels for the upcoming periods, but also looking back over past periods, analysing results, seeing what's worked or what hasn't worked and advising for future initiatives.

What opportunities have you had to progress (and training, promotions etc)?

I've had plenty. My first job was in 2005 as a Waterstones temp in the postroom and on reception. Since then I've worked in 4 different departments, making my way from the Solihull office down to London, gaining plenty of experience and taking on more responsibilites as I've gone along. During this time, I've started and finished studying for a CIMA qualification. Throughout, I was given a lot of support in terms of tuition and exam fees, and also study leave.

What's been your highlight of working for hmv?

The 2009 hmv live was a great night. Getting everybody together in the Hammersmith Apollo, and having Kasabian, Friendly Fires and The Cribs play was fantastic.

What / who is your inspiration?
